Since Bernard's comments about Dana take place during Stephanie Brown's tenure as Robin, I definitely noticed and was bugged about the change. I could definitely see the argument that "Bernard is overcompensating for his internalised homophobia", but...that's a lot of special pleading for a retcon that is clearly a retcon.
This was recently dug up and put on the Robin sub-reddit , which is where I came from. As a guy who did discover I personally like guys as well as ladies in my 20s , it's been very annoying to see these pushes of characters who are hetero become suddnely gay and act as if they were never straight , splitting the difference between your characterization of Bernard and having him go on a discovery that has him thinking "This isn't what I wanted but was expected of me and what I want is potentially is with Tim." would be more interesting than the current route they've put him suddenly in this relationship with Tim that feels so blunt and artifical.
Honestly, you bring up and reasonable point worthy of discussion. Of course it's a little awkward that Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm aren't around to add their thoughts on the topic.
I think Chuck Dixon said the best. It's uncalled for, immature and who'll read that? Kids definitely won't. Then again, shouldn't this comic be for kids?

Heavens, I forgot you even existed.
And after this, I shall forget once more.
